Peasant Cookery
Upscale comfort food in the heart of Winnipeg's Exchange District. House-made philosophy with cured meats, pickled vegetables, and fresh local ingredients.
About Peasant Cookery
Peasant Cookery is a French-inspired bistro located in Winnipeg's historic Exchange District near Old Market Square. Originally opened as Oui Bistro + Wine Bar in 2007, the restaurant evolved into Peasant Cookery after three successful years, shifting to a more approachable atmosphere while maintaining exceptional standards. It's part of WOW Hospitality Concepts, the group behind other Winnipeg spots including 529 Wellington and Los Chicos.
The restaurant specializes in classic European comfort dishes built from the ground up with fresh, local ingredients. Everything is made from scratch - stocks, sauces, and fresh baked bread from lovingly nurtured starters. Their house charcuterie program features cured-in-house meats, and their pickling and preserving program keeps Manitoba-grown ingredients available year-round.
Peasant Cookery is known for their Wednesday "Buck-a-Shuck" oyster nights, aged cheddar gnocchi, and tourtiere. The rustic space features exposed ductwork, high ceilings, wine barrels, and aged wooden floors - the kind of place designed for lingering over carefully crafted dishes.
Customer Review
"Peasant Cookery is one of my favorite spots downtown. I first fell for it during their oyster night. If you’re into oysters, it’s absolutely worth going for that alone. Fresh, great quality, and just a really fun experience overall.
